Gates on the Hawaiian Island of Maui
Pictured above and below are some very cool gates I designed and made for a beautiful home on Maui. The home is built for indoor/outdoor living, with the ocean as their backyard and surrounded by coconut palm trees. The client wanted something to reflect the Hawaiian culture and gave me a few photos they had collected on Hawaiian art, symbols representing experiences of everyday life and how important family and nature is. Through research I found Hawaiian tattoo art that was very similar to the art my clients loved. Between the photos, working with my clients, and my own ideas, I came up with what I think was a fantastic design, and collaborating with my clients was easy and enjoyable; it was delightful working with them.
The gates are made of heavy stainless steel with a zinc oxide primer and a synthetic bronze finish, much more durable than poweder coating since the house is right on the water. The cut-out designs symbolize Hawaiian culture and tradition, as well as representing my client’s family.
The gates were shipped to Maui and the home builder installed them.
Below are some photos of the gates in my shop before shipment to Hawaii, and below those are photos of the gates installed in the home. Along with photos of the entryway and staircase I made for the home.
