Classical Doors for a Palm Desert, California Home

These entries for a home in Palm Desert are quite stunning for the beauty of the figured walnut, the classical design, and the complexity of detail. Both entries are solid figured walnut over 3-1/2" thick with hand-carved details.

The first entry is an arched door with leaded cast glass, large columned surround with transom, and crown detailing. The second entry is very complex having an arched top and curved face (compound curves) with a compound curved jamb. Like the first entry it is made of 3-1/2" thick figured walnut. All the horizontal pieces are bent to a curve with all the mouldings steam bent to each opening. And all the detailing is hand carved by me. The 1/2" thick glass is cast textured and bent to the curve of the door, which I did in my kiln. Included in the photos are some showing the construction process, which was complex and time consuming, but great fun to plan and build.
