Historic Home in Coronado, CA
I recently completed some projects on a really great job in Coronado, CA, on a beautiful historic Colonial Spanish style house. The people I worked with, including the homeowners, interior designer, architect, and contractor were all great to work with. Everyone worked together to produce the best outcome possible. It was a real pleasure working with them. I didn't see the owner of the house often but he appreciated everyone's efforts by telling them frequently how pleased he was with the work as it progressed.
The first pair of doors we made were for the home theater that was built underground and could seat quite a few people. The doors were made of black oak wood from Julian. Several years ago I was contacted about a number of large trees in that area that had died naturally, and was invited to cut them into lumber. We had the trees cut down and milled into lumber. Then I brought them to my property and dried them. The goal of these doors was to look like antiques that were found, and the black oak was perfect for the job. We used moulding details, joinery, hand planing, and finishing techniques to accomplish this. I also hand forged the iron hinges, pulls and lock trim.
The second pair of doors were to the garage coming from a prominent part of the pool patio area. Again they were to look like antiques, handmade and finished with all hand-forged iron hardware. Both sets of doors fit the architecture and are stunning in themselves.
In another blog I will speak about the gates made for the home as well.
