The Fox Door

A couple in Rancho Santa Fe, CA, called me as they had seen a carved entry door I had made and wanted me to do something interesting for their home. We met at their home, which was a single story house and heavily wooded on three sides with eucalyptus trees. After looking through my portfolio they expressed an interest in a nature scene of some kind. Nature is one of my favorite subjects when it comes to designing and carving doors, furniture and cabinetry. It's what I feel makes my work unique and special. When designing a front entryway with trees, flowers, animals, etc, I take into consideration the surrounding area, the landscaping, and the style of the home.

I left with a pretty good feeling for the designs I would present to them and we met again a week later with some rough sketches of trees, birds and flowers. As we were sitting in their living room discussing the drawings, I mentioned how pretty and secluded the canyon was when looking through their windows. They agreed with me and told me that the eucalyptus-covered canyon was home to a family of fox that had lived there for years and this was one of their favorite things about their home and property.

After hearing their story, I asked them if it would be alright to do one more drawing for them, this one including a fox, and they agreed wholeheartedly. We met again the following week and they absolutely loved the drawing. Pictured above is the door carved in heavy relief. It's solid teak with carved wood eucalyptus trunk and branches and glass leaves and background. And of course, the fox!
